Rail careers advisers workshop

In March, school career advisers delved into opportunities in rail during recent information sessions at Rail Academy Newport.

The sessions explore the range of career possibilities in the rail industry and provide advisers with insights on how to support young people to apply for entry level roles.

Representatives from across the industry such as Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM), V/Line and Yarra Trams shared their stories and personal experience and answered questions about working in the industry. V/Line trainer John Taylor also gave an impressive aluminothermic welding demonstration to the career advisers.

The information and insights provided in these sessions will reach thousands of students across the state.

Rail careers event

Eighty year nine and 10 students from secondary schools in Victoria, including Carrum Downs Secondary College, Kurunjang Secondary College and McGuire College, gathered at the Rail Academy Newport in April to learn about rail careers. Each of these students engaged in a range of hands-on learning experiences hosted by the Rail Academy Newport, including:

  • track walk and build, where students were given the opportunity to work as a team to build and lay simulated track
  • virtual reality package showcasing the hazards and dangers that can appear in the rail corridor
  • hearing from guest speakers such as Metro train driver Allison Houghton, who provided a unique insight into what it’s like working within the rail industry and driving trains.
