Rail Careers Week
Vision.
Title. Discovering Rail careers, Rail Careers Week 2019, Rail Academy Newport.
Vision. Welcome to the Rail Academy entrance sign. Students staff on site learning how to build railway tracks.
Text. Why did you bring your students to rail careers week?
Lee, Kurunjang Secondary College. For the students to understand more about the industry, have a first-hand look at the trains, look at the opportunities that were out there, and really just get involved as much as they can.
Text. What was the highlight of your day?
Vernon, Kurunjang Secondary College. My highlight of the day so far was probably when I got to put together the miniature version of the rail, because I got to be like a supervisor and boss everyone around.
Vision. Students building railway track.
Shari, Kurunjang Secondary College. We had to work in teams. We had to build a nine metre track. We divided into different teams to work on it, and we had to make sure that it would run properly for a fake train to run over.
Joshua, Carrum Downs Secondary College. The best thing about being here today would be the virtual reality. It was just a great experience, like I’ve never really had that before. I really felt like I was there and I just felt like I was amongst it, like I felt like I was communicating with people that were, you know, talking back and, yeah, it just was really good.
Vision. Students using virtual reality headsets. Time lapse photography of construction site.
Luke, Carrum Downs Secondary College. In the virtual reality section I got to realise what would be working close to trains and on the worksites and up close to the vehicles.
Text. Train examination activity. Track walk activity and being shown track. Had you considered a career in rail?
Vision. Students doing the train examination activity and the track walk.
Vernon, Kurunjang Secondary College. I’ve never really thought about working in rail but being here today has sort of opened my mind to different jobs that there might be here.
Text. Would you recommend rail careers week to your friends?
Brodie, Carrum Downs Secondary College. Before today I wouldn’t have considered a career in rail just because I wasn’t aware of all the opportunities that they had to offer. I would recommend coming to rails career week because I feel like if you don’t really know what to do as a career, and you don’t know what path to go down, this would definitely be a good option.
Shari, Kurunjang Secondary College. I would recommend coming to the Rail Academy to help understanding with the careers that come with working in the rail industry.
Joshua, Carrum Downs Secondary College. Yes, I would definitely recommend this experience to somebody else. It’s been really good day out just getting amongst it all.
