Hallam students shine in VETDSS program

The Rail Academy’s VET Delivered to Secondary Students (VETDSS) program is setting the stage for the next generation of rail professionals, and the latest cohort of Hallam Secondary College students has proven they’re up to the challenge.

This year, students undertaking the Certificate II in Heavy and Light Rail Fundamentals—a unique pre-vocational course designed to provide secondary students with insight into Victoria’s rail industry—participated in an Interview Skills Day as part of their curriculum.

Hosted by LXRP’s Industry Capability and Inclusion team, the workshop aims to sharpen students’ job readiness skills. Students learned how to craft compelling personal pitches and respond effectively to behavioural-based interview questions. They also heard from representatives from V/Line and Suburban Connect, who shared insights into career pathways and employment opportunities across the rail industry.

A highlight of the day was the interactive mock interviews. In groups, students presented their pitches to industry representatives and tackled behavioural questions, receiving valuable feedback in a real-world setting.

Kimberley Cleggett, Social Impact – Learning and Development at Suburban Connect, praised the students’ preparation and passion.

“We were very impressed with the students’ confidence and ability to reflect on their genuine interest in the rail industry. Many presented their pitches authentically, sharing personal stories and hobbies, which added a unique and engaging touch.”

Sierra Espinosa, Early Career Programs Coordinator at V/Line, highlighted the professionalism of the students.

“The students were incredibly well-prepared, with great eye contact, professional tone, and thought-out responses. Their readiness surpassed even some mature-aged applicants, showcasing the value of workshops like this.”

Keith Hamann, the course trainer, expressed his pride in the students’ growth and engagement.

“I was really impressed… they asked insightful questions and showcased their readiness for industry roles. Their growth and development over the past two years have been incredible to witness.”

Keith also emphasised the significance of events like these for the students’ future.

“This type of event is critical for the student to see that their hard work and dedication to this training course can deliver them a career and opportunity for employment. It also allows them to discover opportunities or careers in the industry they may not have considered.”

The session highlighted the importance of such initiatives in preparing students for real-world roles and emphasised the need for continued collaboration between education providers and industry professionals to support school leavers.

As the 2024 graduating cohort celebrates their achievements, expressions of interest for the 2025 program are now open.
