The Major Transport Infrastructure Authority’s (MTIA) project partners have come together to launch Fusion, the transport industry’s new advanced communications and engagement course.

Fusion is the first communications and engagement course specifically developed by the industry to meet the industry’s growing demand for stakeholder and communications professionals.

The course is delivered by Training for the Future program in conjunction with Swinburne University.

The pilot of Fusion was launched with multiple participants from Level Crossing Removal Project (LXRP), North East Link Project (NELP), West Gate Tunnel (WGT), Major Road Projects Victoria (MRPV), Rail Projects Victoria (RPV), Metro Trains Melbourne (MTM) and John Holland.

It has been designed to upskill entry to mid-level communications and engagement employees in Victorian infrastructure projects, specifically rail, roads, tunnels and construction.

The skills and knowledge covered in the course are unique to the demands of MTIA Communications Teams and prepares staff to meet and exceed the expectations required, as well as aiding in their career progression.

“Coming from a journalism background, this is my first communications role so I’m excited to learn as much as possible and having such a tailored course is a great opportunity. I’m confident my skills will be more well-rounded by the end of the program,” Georgie Haberfield from NELP said.

Over the next few months, this course not only provides specialist training in front-line communications and engagement activity but also develops key ‘soft skills’ such as advanced communication skills, presentation skills, negotiation and influencing skills.

Sarvenaz Almasi from LXRP said: “Having completed a Communications degree, I think this course is very well-tailored for communication and engagement advisors working on MTIA projects. In addition to gaining knowledge about risk management, dealing with difficult people and other communications related topics, I have been able to meet colleagues working on diverse projects, which is a very rare but extremely valuable opportunity.”
