Women in Transport: Celebrating inspiring women

The Women in Transport (WiT) Mentoring Program recently hosted an incredible virtual mid-program event, featuring two inspirational women in transport who shared their remarkable journeys and insights.

Michelle Batsas, Executive Director, Department of Transport & Planning and host of the "Women Who Move Nations" podcast, captivated attendees with her non-linear career path.

Justine's presentation

Michelle highlighted the influence of her family, the value of effective communication and the importance of building a "board of advisers" through strong networks. She also emphasised the power of women uplifting each other, urging us to "assume positive intent" and offer support along the way.

Michelle was followed by Justine Moss, Social Procurement and Aboriginal Engagement Regional Manager at Fulton Hogan.

Justine delivered an inspiring talk about her varied career journey across the corporate, government and not-for-profit sectors. She shared the advice from her mother and a career adviser to "do something that makes you happy," which helped reframe her career direction.

Michelle's presentation

Justine's stories of navigating male-dominated sectors, challenging LGBTQIA+ biases and deep listening and learning from Indigenous communities were captivating. Her reflections on the privilege of being mentored by Indigenous leaders and her current employer's support in aligning with her values and career goals were particularly inspiring.

Lastly, participants in the program heard from Cheaw Lin, Estimator, Metro Trains Melbourne and Rodd Mickelson, GHD Project Director, LXRP, who shared their WiT Mentoring Program experiences and insights so far.

Their tips on building rapport, keeping sessions engaging and fostering mutual respect resonated well and were invaluable for our mentoring community.

With two months left in the program, participants were reminded to review goals, tap into deeper dialogues and reinvigorate their mentoring relationships.
